Don’t Forget About Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

Posted by Mary Krebs, January 17, 2021

Due to the complexity of the Medicare system, it can be easy to forget an occasional detail or important date. But since missing Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment can have consequences that last all year, we wanted to remind you of the actions you can take right now.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment started on January 1 and runs through March 31. This is the time to assess and make changes to your Advantage plan. Your next opportunity will not arrive until the Annual Election Period on October 15, although changes made during that time will not take effect until January 1, 2022.

What you can do during Open Enrollment. For those enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this is the time to evaluate your plan’s offerings and compare with other available plans. You can switch from one Advantage plan to another that better suits you, or you can drop Advantage and return to Original Medicare.

What you cannot do during Open Enrollment. This open enrollment only applies to beneficiaries of Advantage plans. Those enrolled in Original Medicare cannot opt into an Advantage plan at this time. You can do that in the fall, during the Annual Election Period.

What you should consider now. Medicare Advantage was designed to combine both Parts A and B, and many plans also incorporate Part D (prescription drug) benefits. Now is the time to investigate your prescription formulary, or list of medications that your plan covers, to make sure it fits your healthcare needs.

Some Advantage plans also include options like dental care, vision care, hearing exams, and even perks like gym memberships and wellness programs. If those options appeal to you, check your plan and compare with others that are available in your area.

Finally, it is always wise to assess your premiums and other out-of-pocket expenses, to obtain the plan that helps you keep your budget under control. For more help with evaluating all of the Medicare Advantage plans available to you, give us a call and we can answer your questions.
