Using Hobbies to Help the Transition to a Retirement Lifestyle

Posted by Mary Krebs, March 7, 2016

Retirement is a nice change in lifestyle, but many people find that they don’t know what to do when they have so much time on their hands. Are you having a hard time adjusting to your new retirement lifestyle? If you are having a hard time filling your days, then try some of these hobbies to keep yourself busy:

Fitness Classes

It is essential that you stay active throughout your life, because regular exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of certain diseases. Look for senior fitness programs offered at a local recreation center or gym, or you might consider hiring a personal trainer. Focus on mild to moderate exercise levels, such as walking, water aerobics, and yoga.

Music

Have you let your musical talents slide over the years? It is a great time to pick up your old instrument and sharpen your skills again. Look for a local orchestra or musical group that you can join, or find opportunities where you can play for friends and family. If you’ve never played a musical instrument before, then right now is a great opportunity to start taking classes. You are never too old to try something new!

Art

There are many forms of art that can be enjoyed, and retirement is the perfect time in life to let those creative juices flow! Try different types of art, such as painting, sculpting, photography, carving or sketching. These activities help to keep your mind active, and you can also find social groups to enjoy while working on your art.

Gardening

If you enjoy being outside, then you should consider the benefits of starting a garden. You will gain the physical benefits of moving around to pull weeds and plant your garden, and there will be plenty of nutritional benefits when it is time to harvest in the fall. Don’t have a yard for gardening? No problem! Look for a community garden space where you can rent a plot or join in on the group efforts.

Volunteering

Make sure that you are proactive to stay connected with the community, and one of the best ways to get this social interaction is through volunteering. Look for opportunities such as reading at the local elementary school, spending time at a homeless shelter, or helping with a fundraising event.

During retirement, it is essential that you have good insurance coverage so that you can support your health to enjoy these fun activities. For more information about insurance for seniors, contact us today!
